Bates College Men’s Tennis Collects First Win of Spring Season With Solid 6-3 Showing at #31 MIT

Bates College men’s tennis secured its first victory of the 2023 spring season in impressive fashion as the Bobcats doubled up #31 Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 6-3, on the road. 

Friday’s win snaps a dual-match slide of six-straight for Bates as the garnet and white goes to 2-5 overall. the Engineers, with the defeat, falls to 5-4.

The Bobcat quartet of Cameron Kania (Sr.-Middlefield, Conn.), Alexander Gujarathi (Jr.-Plymouth, Mass.), Nick Forester (Sr.-Falmouth, Maine), and Teddy Koide (Sr.-Morristown, N.J.) contributed to all six points for the victors on the day.

In doubles play, Gujarathi and Kania joined forces to best MIT’s Kailas Kahler and Derek Shen in the No. 1 slot, 8-7 (7-5). At No. 3, Forester and Koide held off Joseph Li and Daniel Papacica for an 8-6 victory.

As for singles competition, Kania opened at No. 1 with a 7-5, 6-4 straight-set win vs. Shen while Gujarathi dismissed Kahler in three frames (7-6, 4-6, 6-2). Forester secured a victory at No. 4 in comeback fashion, escaping his match vs. Ryan Xiao by scores of 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Koide put away Sundeep Chakladar (7-5, 7-5) at No. 5  for the Bobcats’ sixth and final point.

The Bobcats look to build off of Friday’s performance their next time out, which will be Friday, March 24 at home vs. #30 Skidmore College. Start time will be 4:00 p.m. in Merrill Gymnasium.
