Cost of education decreases for all Central Maine Community College students in 2022-23 school year

Tuition rates for in-state students at Central Maine Community College declined by 2.7% during the 2022-23 school year, based on the latest figures provided, according to the latest disclosure from the National Center for Education Statistics.

Maine residents paid $3,760 to enroll at the two-year public college this year, which is $104 less than the $3,864 charged in the 2021-22 academic year.

Non-resident students were charged $6,640 for the 2022-23 school year, representing a 1.5% decrease from $6,744 in 2021-22 and amounting to 76.6% more than the in-state tuition rate.

Approximately 92% of the undergraduate student body at the college are Maine residents. Students from other states make up about 7%, while international students account for roughly 1%.

Data indicates that 98% of full-time undergraduates who began studies at Central Maine Community College in 2022-23 received some form of financial aid. A total of 598 students were awarded grants or scholarships amounting to $3.7 million, and 165 students obtained student loans exceeding $820,866.

Among all undergraduates, 1,886 students received grants or scholarships totaling $11.9 million. Additionally, 567 students borrowed $3.2 million in federal student loans.

Undergraduate education costs have seen a significant increase over the past few decades. Data shows a 169% rise in the average total cost, including tuition, fees, room, and board, between 1980 and 2020.

According to a 2023 College Board report, in-state students at public universities paid an average of $11,260, while out-of-state students paid $29,150 in the 2023-24 academic year.

Meanwhile, student loan debt has steadily increased over the last 30 years, reaching $1.75 trillion in 2024, averaging a total of $28,950 per borrower. Federal loans make up 92% of the debt, with over half of students at both public and private four-year colleges graduating with student loans.
