The Lewiston Police Department launched recently Neighborhoods First, a strategy aimed at lowering the number of quality of life service calls into the Police Department. The strategy is a direct response to the increased nuisance calls initiated by the local business community and citizens.

With Neighborhoods First in place, LPD will be able to rapidly respond to highly-visible, minor misbehaviors that if not handled as they occur, those overlooked offenses could mushroom into larger issues. LPD is now able to launch this strategy because it is at a 95% staffing capacity.

Neighborhoods First strategy brings together a concerted effort by the Crime Reduction Unit, Community Resource Team and dedicated support from the Project Support You (PSY) Team, Criminal Investigation Division and Patrol Division. This team will be expanding their focus beyond 911 calls. They will be performing proactive engagement with offenders who commit violations, whether in the downtown business district or in neighborhoods.
