U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate the population of older adults in the nation continues to rise while younger cohorts decline. From 2020 to 2024, the population of Americans age 65 and up grew by 13%, as those under 18 decreased by 1.7%. The country’s older adult demographic has expanded notably over the last century, climbing from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million in 2024.
A study from 2021 estimates about half of these individuals—nearly 28 million—are likely to need some form of long-term services and support, and over a third may ultimately require nursing home care.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
