St. Mary’s D’Youville Pavilion ranked as the largest nursing facility in Androscoggin County for the first quarter of 2026, data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) shows.

The facility had 210 beds available, surpassing the Androscoggin County average by 120 beds during the same period. On average, 167.6 residents were cared for at the facility during these months.

CMS assigned an overall rating of 3 out of 5 to St. Mary’s D’Youville Pavilion, a score that slightly exceeds the Maine state average of 2.9 among nursing homes.

Clover Health Care was the runner-up for largest nursing home in the county during the quarter, with 109 beds available, while Marshwood Center followed closely behind with 108 beds.

St. Mary’s D’Youville Pavilion reported no fines or penalties during the first quarter of 2026.

Androscoggin County was home to two non-profit nursing homes as of the same period.

Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate that the senior population in the U.S. is continuing to expand, while numbers for younger age groups are dropping. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans 65 and older rose by 13%, whereas those under 18 decreased by 1.7%. The nation’s population of older adults has climbed significantly over the past century, growing from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 study finds that almost half of this group, or roughly 28 million people, are expected to use some form of long-term services and support. More than a third may eventually make use of nursing home services, the study projects.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
