Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate that the senior population in the U.S. is continuing to expand, while numbers for younger age groups are dropping. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans 65 and older rose by 13%, whereas those under 18 decreased by 1.7%. The nation’s population of older adults has climbed significantly over the past century, growing from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.
A 2021 study finds that almost half of this group, or roughly 28 million people, are expected to use some form of long-term services and support. More than a third may eventually make use of nursing home services, the study projects.

But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
