The Raise-Op Housing Cooperative at 198 Blake Street, Lewiston, took center stage this afternoon as a groundbreaking ceremony occurred for a new, safe, healthy, energy-efficient model for affordable housing. Another similar building will also be sited on Walnut Street. Various speakers took the podium to include Mayor Carl L. Sheline who stated, “This development represents new beginnings, empowerment, and achievement. Here, people and families will continue to build toward our shared future of a lead-free Lewiston and a neighborhood where all people can afford a safe, comfortable place to call home.” Maine Housing Director Dan Brennan praised the uniqueness of the project and looks forward to many more like it in Lewiston during the remainder of his career! Shaad Masood, President of Raise-Op, praised the “intrepid spirit” of the Raise-Op community, many of whom spoke at the ceremony. Craig Saddlemire, Cooperative Development Organizer, was all smiles while observing a powerful vision come to fruition. There were even some tears shed, as Shanna Cox, President/CEO of the LA Metro Chamber, had cooperative living as part of her affordable housing journey and was touched by today’s celebration.
