Lewiston Police Department responds to two serious vehicular accidents
On Wed., Dec. 7, the Lewiston Police Department (LPD) responded to two serious motor vehicle accidents involving pedestrians. The first accident was reported just before 4:30 pm at the intersection of East Ave. and Lisbon St. When police arrived, they located pedestrian Mariyum Msika of Morocco with substantial injuries. Msika, 24-years old, was transported to Central Maine Medical Center (CMMC) in Lewiston where she died from her injuries. The initial investigation revealed that Msika was crossing East Avenue in the area of CVS when she was struck by a 2013 Dodge Ram, operated by Joshua Lessard of Green. Lessard, 37-years old, had just taken a right onto East Avenue from Lisbon Street before striking Msika. Msika was not in a crosswalk. Speed and intoxicants do NOT appear to be factors and Lessard is cooperating with the investigation. At 4:39 PM, LPD was dispatched to Park St. and Chestnut St. for another pedestrian accident. Police located pedestrian Heather Davis, 28-years old, seriously injured on Park Street. Video and witness accounts indicate that a 2018 Toyota Highlander was traveling on Park Street with no lights when it struck Davis who was crossing Park Street in the crosswalk. Police identified the driver of the vehicle as an unlicensed 17 year-old, whose identity will not be released due to the driver's age. The victim, Davis, was transported to CMMC where she remains in critical condition. The Lewiston Police Department’s Accident Reconstruction Team and the Androscoggin County Team investigated both accident scenes. A member from the District Attorney's Office also responded to examine the locations. No charges have been filed at this time; both reports will be submitted to the District Attorney's Office for their review.
The Lewiston Police thank the Androscoggin County Sheriff's Department who assisted with patrol duties since both accidents took up much of the LPD's manpower.
