Bates College Submitted with a kiss

4280e

“I have loved the research process of writing a history thesis and found there is a lot of room for new voices within the field that focus on marginalized voices throughout history. I am very proud!!”

—  History major Liv Silva ’22 of North Billerica, Mass., bound her thesis yesterday in Ladd Library with the help of Miles Hagedorn ’25 of Yarmouth, Maine, and a large group of friends, who afterwards followed her onto the library terrace to celebrate by popping a champagne cork. Silva and Hagedorn became friends this winter during their long rehearsal process for the theater production “35mm.”

Silva’s thesis, advised by Assistant Professor of History Erik Bernardino, is titled “Excluded from the Gold Mountain: Anti-Chinese Misogyny and Racialized Immigration Restriction.”

“After completing my thesis I am feeling a sense of accomplishment I haven't ever before, with a newfound confidence towards writing in-depth academic texts,” Silva said.

Many seniors take part in a ritual that has arisen within the last few years: A senior will invite a first-year student to help bind a copy of the thesis. After the binding, the first-year gives the bound copy a kiss to make it official.
