Bates College Kwei wins individual medalist honors, women's golf finishes runner-up at Williams Golf Classic

Sophomore Maddy Kwei earned individual medalist honors and the Bates women's golf team turned in another strong performance, finishing in second place at the Williams Golf Classic, held Saturday and Sunday at Taconic Golf Club.

Kwei (Pasadena, Calif.) shot a 76 on Saturday and followed that up with a 77 on Sunday, good for a 153 and a two-stroke victory over runner-up Natalie Robson of York College. The Bates women's golf team has now produced the overall individual winner in three of the four tournaments the Bobcats have competed in this fall.

Junior Alex Voight-Shelley (State College, Pa.) continued her outstanding season this weekend, shooting back-to-back rounds of 78, good for a tie for third place in the field of 43.

As a team, the Bobcats shot 661, good for second place out of eight schools in the tournament. York College won the tournament with a team score of 643, although the Bobcats finished just two strokes behind York on Sunday.

Bates entered the second round of the tournament five strokes back of NESCAC foe Wesleyan. They proceeded to beat the Cardinals by five strokes overall, shooting 327 as a team on Sunday compared to the Cardinals' mark of 337.

The Bobcats travel to Middlebury next Saturday and Sunday for the George Phinney Golf Classic.
