Game two of the Can-Am tournament proved to be a major challenge for the Mustangs. Despite playing in familiar territory at SMCC, and with a quick turnaround from the night before, the boys started off slow trailing at the half 35-31. Foul trouble plagued CM as big man DeMarco McKissic picked up two quick fouls and then a fourth early in the second half.
As the game progressed back and forth, Coach Gonyea tried multiple combinations of players in an effort to ware down the Tigers as they also were playing their second game in two days. Led by big Michael Connolly, (11 points, 13 rebounds) CM kept the game close and took a lead with 43 seconds left in the game. A huge three from the Tigers Kevin Agyemang with 14 ticks on the clock put Roxbury up 73-72. Again, Connolly came up big for CM tipping in a missed shot with 2.9 seconds left in the game to secure the victory.
Coach Gonyea stated, "We didn't play our best and all are still working on playing together and understanding their roles, but never less, this was a step forward. Michael was the best player on the court today and he showed why he can be one of the best players in the conference."
Along with Connolly's contribution, Wyatt Hathaway added 10 points and 4 rebounds, McKissic added 10 points and 4 rebounds in only 13 minutes of play, Malik Foster chipped in with 9 points.
The Mustangs are back on the road Wednesday when they travel to UMF to take on the Beavers.
