Bates College Noah Riskind '16 Elevated to Interim Head Men's Soccer Coach

Noah Riskind '16 has been elevated to interim head coach of the Bates men's soccer team, as announced Monday by Director of Athletics Jason Fein.

"We are fortunate that Noah is not only a Bates soccer alum., but also a rising star in the coaching ranks who is up to the task at hand in leading the Bobcats for this upcoming 2022 campaign," Fein said. "His passion for soccer, educating and mentoring student-athletes, and his alma mater, make him a great choice for interim head coach of men's soccer."

Riskind, who spent the previous two years as an assistant coach on the Bates staff, replaces Tyler Sheikh, who stepped down from the head coaching role in order to spend more time with his family. Sheikh coached the Bobcats for three seasons, finishing his time at the helm with an overall record of 23-22-1.

"I deeply appreciate this opportunity to lead the team that I love at the institution that has provided life-changing opportunities to so many students," Riskind said. "The Bates men's soccer community is truly a family, and I am honored and humbled to serve as interim head coach. I look forward to the challenge of the upcoming season and to working with the players, assistant coaches, and all of my colleagues at Bates athletics to put a strong, cohesive team on the pitch."

Upon graduating from Bates, Riskind first worked as a seventh-grade math teacher in New Bedford, Massachusetts, as a Teach For America corps member, and then taught English in Colombia for two academic years on back-to-back Fulbright grants.

A member of the varsity soccer team for all four of his years at Bates, Riskind served as captain for two years and earned a First Captain's Award, as well as Bates' George L. Wigton Scholar Athlete Award. Riskind, a defender, started 54 games during his time at Bates, including all 40 NESCAC regular season games. Riskind was also a member of the 2015 northeast division champion Portland Phoenix PDL team.

Before Bates, Riskind played for Bethesda Soccer Club and was a member of the Region I ODP team. Riskind, an economics major and Spanish minor, also holds a Master's degree in education from Boston University.

The Bobcats open their 2022 season on Tuesday, September 6 when they visit Maine Maritime Academy for a match that gets underway at 7:30pm.

Following the 2022 soccer season, Bates will launch a search for the next head coach of the Bobcats.
