Bates College Women's Soccer Blanks Maine Maritime 2-0 to Open 2022 Season

Senior captain Courtney Gray and first-year Gabby Hill-Junke both found the back of the net in a dominant 2-0 win for the Bates women's soccer team Tuesday night over Maine Maritime Academy.

The Bobcats (1-0) did not allow the Mariners (0-2-1) to get a shot off all night. Meanwhile, Bates finished the match with 29 shots, 14 of which were on goal. Bess MacArthur made 10 saves but also allowed a pair of goals between the pipes for the hosts in 73:08 minutes played. First-year Samantha Bunar (Lynnfield, Mass.) played all 90 minutes in goal for the Bobcats to pick up the shutout victory in her collegiate debut.

After a scoreless first half, Bates got on the board in the 50th minute when Gray (Belmont, Mass.) finished off a chance on a scrum after a corner kick.  Bates had a few cracks at it and eventually the ball went in for the go-ahead tally and the third goal of Gray's collegiate career.

Then the Bobcats earned an impressive insurance tally when senior captain Cece Pilgrim (North Kingstown, R.I.) slipped the ball through center to Hill-Junke (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and the rookie beat the keeper to make it 2-0 Bates in the 70th minute of action.

This marks the eighth straight time Bates has defeated MMA and the ninth straight time the Bobcats have won their season opener.

Bates women's soccer is back in action this Saturday when the Bobcats host rival Bowdoin at 12pm.
