Taking the pitch under the bright lights of Garcelon Field for the first time this season, Bates College women's soccer shined Monday night as the Bobcats, thanks to a second-half score from first-year Kylie Musante, held off visiting Husson University, 2-1, in non-conference action.
Bates (2-1) lit the scoreboard for an early 1-0 advantage at 31:21 when first-year Gabby Hill-Junke (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scorched a Musante (Danville, Calif.) touch from 25 yards out into the upper right quadrant for her second goal of the season. Husson's Charlotte Messer netted the equalizer in the 39th minute (38:20) as the senior swiped an errant Bates pass, then deflected a shot off a defender into the lower left.
With the score knotted at 1-1, it would be Musante's turn to add her name to the scoring column. The Bates midfielder dumped a seemingly harmless ball onto the Husson net. Goalkeeper Hannah Kenney attempted to push the shot over the crossbar, but inadvertently had it glance in for what would be the game-winner (70:43).
The victors owned a healthy 15-3 surplus when it came to total shots (9-2 on frame). First-year Samantha Bunar (Lynnfield, Mass.) required a single save over 90:00 to push the first year's record to 2-1. Kenney gathered six saves in the setback.
The garnet and white returns to NESCAC play this Saturday morning as the Bobcats visit Williams College for an 11:00 a.m. contest.
