Taking the court for the first time in 2023, the #22 Bobcats welcomed #11 Stanford University to the Bates Squash Center Friday for a showdown between a pair of nationally-ranked women's programs.
The Cardinal, playing its first of four matches in the state of Maine this weekend, doubled up the Bobcats, 6-3, to earn its first victory (1-3) of the season. The garnet-and-white, with the setback, slips to 1-6 after a third-consecutive defeat.
The Bobcats enjoyed their best success at the bottom of the lineup as Bates tallied wins in positions #7 through #9.
In the #7 slot, Daina Velez (So.-Bronx, N.Y.) outlasted Stanford's Abigail Alemayeho (Fy.-San Diego, Calif.) in five sets with scores of 11-6, 5-11, 10-12, 13-11, 12-10. At #8, Abigail Zerbey (Sr.-North Andover, Mass.) needed only 10 minutes to collect a swift 3-0 triumph (11-0, 11-5, 11-4) while Caroline Taggart (So.-Concord, Mass.) proved victorious at #9 (11-9, 12-10, 9-11, 12-10).
