Bates College Swimming and Diving wins eight events against Tufts in Senior Meet at Tarbell Pool

The Bates swimming and diving team honored its senior class of 14 Bobcats before Friday night's dual meet against Tufts, where the Bobcats won eight events against the NESCAC powerhouse Jumbos.


The No. 8 nationally ranked Tufts women scored 159 points to No. 23 Bates' 67, while the No. 14 nationally ranked Tufts men tallied 131 to Bates' 89. 


Before the meet, the Bobcats honored seniors Nathan Berry (Augusta, Maine), Julia Bisson (North Yarmouth, Maine), Josie Brohard (Timnath, Colo.), Liam Conklin (Newton, Mass.), Tristan Depew (Santa Barbara, Calif.), Edmond Giang (Wayland, Mass.), Abigail Gibbons (Westtown, N.Y.), Kona Lindsey (Colorado Springs, Colo.), John Marcolina (Mystic, Conn.), Dylan McAfee (Washington, D.C.), Emme Pike (York, Maine), Nate Sommer (Terre Haute, Ind.), Paul Southern (Virginia Beach, Va.), and Megan Strynar (Lexington, S.C.) at Tarbell Pool. 


Bates women's highlights

  • The 400-yard medley relay team of sophomore Sophie Cassily (Rye, N.H.), Gibbons, first-year Emma Burke (New Hartford, N.Y.), and junior Grace Wenger (Hanover, N.H.) took first place in 3:55.31. 
  • Wenger won the 100-yard freestyle in 52.54 seconds and finished second in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.45 seconds.
  • Gibbons won the 50-yard breaststroke in 30.18 seconds and placed third in the 100-yard IM in 1:01.26.
  • Sophomore Stephanie Tropper (Solon, Ohio) placed third in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:51.89 and third in the 400-yard freestyle in 4:13.94.
  • Cassily finished third in the 100-yard freestyle in 54.57 seconds.
  • The mixed 200-yard freestyle relay team of junior Marjorie McLeod (Durham, Maine), Marcolina, Strynar, and first-year Nate Pierce (Fairfield, Maine) took third place in 1:34.01. 
Bates men's highlights

  • The 400-yard medley team of Berry, Sommer, Giang, and first-year Max Cory (Dublin, Calif.) took first place in 3:23.57.
  • Berry won the 100-yard IM in 53.11 seconds and the 50-yard backstroke in 22.88 seconds.
  • Cory won the 100-yard freestyle in 46.97 seconds and placed second in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.43 seconds.
  • Sommer led a 1-2-3 Bates finish in the 50-yard breaststroke, racing to the finish in 26.74 seconds. First-year Marrich Somridhivej (South Windsor, Conn.) placed second in 26.75 seconds and first-year Kailer Tom (Daly City, Calif.) took third in 27.02 seconds. Sommer finished second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.79.
  • Junior Mark Gregory (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) finished second in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:03.42 and first-year Matthew Kunkiewicz (Hillsborough, N.J.) took third in 10:06.34.
  • Depew placed third in the 50-yard butterfly in 23.42 seconds.
  • Marcolina took third in the 100-yard freestyle in 49.04 seconds.
  • First-year Lucas Gold (Rocky Hill, N.J.) finished third in the 400-yard freestyle in 3:49.15.
The Bates women head to Bowdoin for their CBB Meet a week from Saturday while the Bates men head to Colby for their CBB Meet on Saturday, Feb. 4.
