All-Region honors for the 2023 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field season were announced on Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, with nine Bates men's track and field athletes making the list.
Top-5 individuals in each event from each region earned All-Region honors, in addition to each of the members of a top-3 ranked relay team.
Senior captain Liam Byrne (Ridgefield, Conn.) and junior Jacob Goff (Scarborough, Maine) led the way for Bates, with both earning All-Region honors in the weight throw and the shot put.
Byrne set personal records in both events this season, with his top effort in the weight throw coming at the Middlebury Small College Invitational, held in Boston back in January. Byrne tossed the weight 58-7.25 (17.86m) there and then he saved his best for last in the shot put, recording a personal record distance of 51-5.5 (15.68m) at the Tufts National Qualifying Meet last Saturday, the 10th best indoor shot put performance in Bates history.
Goff (Scarborough, Maine) turned in his season-best shot put performance at the Bates Invitational in January, with a top effort of 49-11.25 (15.22m). His best weight throw this season came at the Maine State Meet in February, where he threw the weight 52-3.75 (15.94m).
Joining Byrne and Goff among the All-Region throwers for Bates is junior James Guinee (Topsfield, Mass.), who made the list in the weight throw thanks to his personal record heave of 53-11.25 (16.44m) at the MIT Tri-Meet in January.
A pair of Bobcat sprinters also earned All-Region honors. Senior Derek Shen (Bellevue, Wash.) became the first, and so far only, Bobcat in program history to break the seven-second mark in the 60-meter dash. His time of 6.92 seconds, recorded at the Lynn Ruddy Invitational, is the current program record. Meanwhile, senior captain Colby Stakun-Pickering (Wellesley, Mass.) broke the Bates indoor record in the 200 meters. His All-Region time of 22.19 seconds came at the New England Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in late February.
Four more Bobcats earned All-Region honors, as part of the Bates Distance Medley Relay team.
Sophomore Aidan Rooney (Bay Shore, N.Y.), senior Peter Ackley (New Albany, Ohio), first-year Jackson Monz (North Logan, Utah), and junior Ned Farrington (Cohasset, Mass.) teamed up to run the DMR at New Englands in 9:59.32, the ninth fastest mark in Bates history.
The Bobcats open the outdoor track and field season on Saturday, April 1 when they host the Bates College Quad Meet.
