Bates College Six Bobcats Represent Bates on NESCAC Winter All-Sportsmanship Team

Six Bates student-athletes have been named to the 2023 NESCAC Winter All-Sportsmanship Team, announced Wednesday by the New England Small College Athletic Conference.

A total of 85 student-athletes have been named to the Winter All-Sportsmanship Team. The team is comprised of one student-athlete from each institution for each winter sport the conference sponsors (men's and women's basketball, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's squash, and men's and women's swimming & diving. Honorees are selected by the players and coaches from their respective teams.

Bates women's squash junior, Andy Martagon (Belmont, Mass.), was the lone Bobcat honoree to earn this prestigious accolade for a second time. Andy was also a selection in 2022.

The NESCAC All-Sportsmanship Team recognizes student-athletes from each varsity sport who have demonstrated outstanding dedication to sportsmanship. These student-athletes exhibit respect for themselves, their teammates, coaches, opponents, and spectators. They display sportsmanship, not only as a participant in their sport, but also as a spectator and in their everyday lives. Through their positive actions and example, these student-athletes inspire others to adhere to the quality of sportsmanship that the NESCAC and the NCAA endorse.

Men's Basketball: Grant Nadeau (So.-Gorham, Maine)
Women's Basketball: Jenna Berens (Sr.-Durham, Conn.)
Men's Squash: Garrett Wenberg (Jr.-Rye, N.Y.)
Women's Squash: Andy Martagon (Jr.-Puebla, Mexico)
Swimming & Diving: Jaewoo Kim (So.-San Ramon, Calif.)
Swimming & Diving: Grace Wenger (Jr.-Hanover, N.H.)

The All-Sportsmanship Team was created by the NESCAC Student Advisory Committee on Athletics' (SAAC). The NESCAC SAAC serves as the liaison between the student-athletes of NESCAC member institutions and conference administrators. The committee provides a voice to represent the concerns of all student-athletes and to discuss issues impacting student-athlete welfare. The NESCAC SAAC represents all students who participate in intercollegiate athletics and promotes and celebrates their achievements.
