Senior captain Nathan Berry finished fifth in the country in the 100-yard backstroke, highlighting day three of the NCAA Championships Friday for the Bates swimming and diving program.
Berry (Augusta, Maine) finished third in the prelims with a time of 47.29 seconds before taking fifth in the championship final in 47.05, good for All-America honors. The winner of the 100 back, Whitman College's Tanner Filion, set an NCAA Division III record with his time of 45.75 seconds.
For the women's team, sophomore Sophie Cassily (Rye, N.H.) scored points in the 100-yard backstroke, tying for 10th place with her finals time of 55.83 seconds after she swam 55.77 in the prelims.
Through three days of competition, the Bates women are in 18th place out of 32 scoring teams with 39.5 points and the men are 15th out of 42 scoring teams with 83 points.
